Saturday's 10th Tour des Fleurs 10K/20K will showcase many of the area's top elite and age group distance runners. The men's and women's 20K fields feature some top area top distance runners, including a few who will be attempting to secure marathon Olympic Trials qualifying times at upcoming fall races. Hundreds of others are using the race as a benchmark to assess their training for the Dec. 13 Dallas Marathon, Half Marathon and Behringer Relays. The race is one of 30 area events Saturday and Sunday throughout North Texas. Other notable events Saturday include the 30th Wipe Out Kids Cancer Oktoberfest Run for the Children in Addison and the 22nd Dash for Dignity , a race co-directed by Channel 4 sports anchor Mike Doocy and his wife, Ruth. Also this weekend: the Plano Balloon Fest, featuring a 5K/1K on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday. Most events are non-profit 5Ks, promoting health and fitness and raising funds for worthy charities. There also are a handful of triathlons, trail runs and adventure races. "This is the kickoff of fall racing season in Dallas," said local race producer Logan Burgess. The Tour des Fleurs offers the top five overall and top three masters men and women cash prizes in the 20K and the 10K. Overall winners receive $400, second-place $200, third-place $150, fourth-place $100 and fifth place $75. The top three masters... The longer distance events were intentionally chosen and scheduled three months out as an opportunity for participants to gauge their progress at a race. Luke's Locker incorporated the event into its training program. It helped the Arboretum ensure runners were on hand to support the inaugural event. Part of the issue, Lucas said, had to do with the registration fees for the Luke's Locker training program participants.
